Hospitality as a life philosophy
A family of three takes care of your every wish at your holiday destination. A job like no other. How did the Zürns come upon this role? It involved a little adventure.
Many would consider living in the Caribbean, on the Costa Rican coast, and running a charming little hotel to be an enviable existence. Yolanda Zürn, her husband Josef and daughter Vanessa could certainly have gone on living there forever, too.
Yolanda has 58 years of experience in working with people from different cultures, a degree in international relations, and speaks five languages. Josef Zürn is a qualified electrician, an experienced project manager and able to rapidly find solutions for all kinds of technical issues. Both he and his daughter Vanessa (31), who trained as a tourism technician, speak four languages. The experienced team is used to offering guests a very personal level of service every single day, in a safe, family atmosphere.
And now Salema?! The Zürns wanted to move to Portugal to be closer to their family, but to also continue working in the tourism industry, too. sevencollection happened to be looking for a team with experience in providing top-quality personalised service for a manageable number of guests. It was still something of an adventure for the three nonetheless.
We left Costa Rica last December with just eight suitcases, our Persian cat Leonardo and our Great Dane Kayla. I hardly knew Salema, and my husband and daughter had never been here before.
And what is the well-travelled newcomers’ impression of Salema? “When we first arrived in Salema, it felt like we had gone back in time. Everything was so wonderfully peaceful, the vast blue sea smiled back at us from beneath sunny skies, and the fishermen tended their nets and boats,” says Yolanda Zürn. “Later on, we sat on our terrace and enjoyed the incredibly beautiful views. The village of Salema occupies a spectacular location on the cliffs, overlooking the sea. The blue water and whitewashed houses create an incredible contrast. There are not many places where the natural beauty and architectural charm interact in such a way that it is hard to believe that it actually really exists.”
Team Zürn has a vision. Appreciating the direct contact with guests as an experience that is very often highly rewarding and enriching is the secret to true service quality. Vanessa Zürn looks forward to welcoming guests at the reception on Largo da Liberdade. Determining guests’ needs and taking optimal care of them is just her thing. The Zürns are delighted when they hear people say at the end of their stay: “We had a great time and would have loved to stay longer.”
