The mighty Atlantic. Spectacular bays, cliffs, and sandy beaches. Only in the Algarve.

Why the Algarve is always a good idea.

Whether you’re sporty or reflective, a solo traveller or a large family – the Algarve is a popular destination for young and old alike. Europe’s sunniest coastline boasts around 300 days of sunshine a year. The climate here is mild all year round and pleasantly dry even in the hot summer thanks to constant air movement. The maximum temperature in the summer months from June to September is around 30 degrees Celsius; rainy days are few and far between. The water temperature in the Atlantic is rather warm at an average 18 degrees and is ideal for swimming and a range of water sports. Even in the winter months, the thermometer rarely drops below 10 degrees, averaging around 16 degrees Celsius.

The best time to visit for a beach holiday is between June and August. During this time, you can expect around 12 hours of sunshine a day and enjoy temperatures that are consistently above 25 degrees Celsius, if not over 30 degrees. The water temperatures in the relatively cool Atlantic ocean can even reach around 21 degrees. Of course, the sea breeze offers a welcome freshness in summer.

Temperatures reach an average of 20 degrees Celsius in the spring months of March to May. There are only a few rainy days and conditions are ideal for an active holiday or a city break. However, the water temperature remains quite cool at this time of year, so you have to be brave to go for a dip in the sea.

In the autumn months of September to November, temperatures often reach around 25 degrees Celsius, but the hours of sunshine are considerably fewer and rain is a possibility. Similarly to the spring, this time of year is suitable for exploring the towns or nature itself. The sea is still warm until mid-October at least, so there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a late summer beach holiday.

A sample from the book:
“Multiple fishing rods, brightly-coloured lures, endless waves, an encounter with a ten-armed cephalopod, but only two half-full buckets: spending a few hours on the autumnal Atlantic with fisherman Erico Gomes Martins.

A beautiful September evening is drawing to a close. Fim do trabalho! Noélia’s late guests are enjoying their last glass of wine or sipping their bica. The restaurant door swings open once again and a slim, sinewy man slowly makes his way towards the kitchen. Noélia comes to greet him, casting an appreciative glance at the red bucket in his right hand. A few words are exchanged and a brief nod is given: comprado, bought! This is how we get to know the fisherman Erico Gomes Martins. He regularly offers his catch of the day to Noélia in Cabanas de Tavira. And after a brief chat, he invites us to go out to sea with him the next day. Combinado! We agree to meet at 5pm at O Armazém, a café on the pier in Tavira.

The banks of the river Gilão are lined with only one and two-storey houses: some are simple and have been converted into taverns and souvenir shops, while others have been beautifully renovated, like the historic fish market. It’s not just the buildings near the river that bear witness to Tavira’s former heyday, but also the villas of the tuna barons. From the 18th century until the 1970s, the coastal town made a living from catching and processing red tuna.”
