Salema: at one with the elements.
The town of Salema extends over the valley’s slopes like a net that has been drawn tight down at the little beach promenade. White houses are dotted along the craggy shoreline, overlooking the bay. In the old village, narrow alleys that could once only be accessed on foot by donkey lead down to the sandy beach. To this day, they remain inaccessible to motor vehicles – these must be left in the designated areas close by.
The sea is omnipresent here. The ripples of this vast blue expanse will reach all the way into your dreams. It can be heard in the café, the bakery – simply everywhere. Day after day, the fishermen of Salema draw their boats back up onto the sandy beach and help determine the rhythm of life. At night, their navigation lights add specks of glitter to the black sea. In the morning, they unload their catch directly on the beach – the fish really couldn’t get any fresher!
Praia da Salema is almost too beautiful to say so aloud. The golden beach is unadulterated nature with delightfully fine sand on which the tide sometimes washes up the odd boulder. Higher up, on a rocky outcrop, a beach bar offers the perfect spot to enjoy the panoramic views. There is a little kiosk with toilets and showers. Parasols and sun loungers are available for hire.
Salema has been attracting visitors for a very long time now. And yet the town is neither touristy nor overcrowded. Everything you could ever need to relax is right here. Along with the necessary tranquillity.
At low tide, it is possible to walk along the rocky coastline for miles, alone and at one with nature. From the autumn, the beach is virtually deserted despite the beautiful weather. You’ll already be transported to another world after taking just a few paces along the sheer coastline. A scene that has existed for thousands of years. Immense bizarre rock formations in fascinating colours. The exposed layers of rock betray the might of the tectonic forces. Layer upon layer of geological history, weathering and the never-ending ebb and flow. You’ll feel like you’ve returned from another planet afterwards.
