Safety: cliffs and pickpockets
Often underestimated: rocks falling from sheer cliffs.

Safety: cliffs and pickpockets

Portugal remains an earthquake region. Indeed, signs on the beaches warn of the danger of tsunamis thereafter. Such occurrences are extremely uncommon though.

One more regular occurrence – common to all rocky coastlines around the world – is the odd rockfall; larger unexpected landslides are rare, but can be deadly. When out walking, please therefore remain alert to dangers from above and ideally keep your distance from the cliffs; it is nicest to paddle barefoot in the shallows anyway. On clifftops, avoid taking any risks by staying well away from the edge, even on viewing platforms with railings.

Do not leave any valuables in cars and be sure to always lock the doors. Even if the fantastic views make it tempting to jump out to take a quick photo. Unfortunately, thefts are not uncommon at more remote panoramic viewpoints.
